GET Outside Series – Connected to Safety with Backcountry Zero
August 22, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Our third and final GET Outside event will be lead by Teton County Idaho Search and Rescue in partnership with Backcountry Zero. Learn how modern & free tech tools can help you have a successful and enjoyable excursion without distracting from your experience.
What is Backcountry Zero?
Backcountry Zero focuses on developing educational curriculum, best practices, and informational events for all backcountry recreational activities in every season. From activities like rafting and cycling, skiing and snowmobiling, climbing and mountaineering to hunting and fishing, the program will work with the community to establish the tools needed for safer backcountry travel throughout the year, while focusing on the program’s vision.
The main objective of Backcountry Zero is to work with the community to reduce injuries and fatalities in the Tetons. This includes starting, fostering, and supporting conversations, classes, teaching, learning, exploring and understanding of the backcountry as much as possible, and being: Prepared, Practiced and Present.
DESCRIPTION: A variety of technology exists for navigation, communication and emergency notifications. We will discuss various technology and devices that can be used in the backcountry. Examples of devices will be available to review.
A hike on the trails surrounding Mike Harris will follow, using smartphone based navigation.
Participants should download a free 7-day trial of the GAIA iOS or Android app AND maps for the Victor area prior to this event.
